CHRISTMAS CONCERT - Thursday 2nd December
The 2010 Christmas Concert proved a great example of how ‘the show must go on’, despite staff and student illness. So many students were willing to step up and deputise for absent friends and their confidence in taking on new roles at such short notice was remarkable (and very much appreciated). In the end it was a lovely opportunity to listen to some real talent and witness both some new talent coming through as well as the maturing performances of some seasoned pros!
There was a wonderful variety of solo, duet and small ensemble performances throughout the evening.
The orchestra, led by Miss McAuley, played a central role in the evening, performing several numbers with vocalists. This included a final rendition of Merry Christmas Everybody in which the audience joined in, in good voice!
Vocal group performed two gospel-influenced numbers, in readiness for their workshop with the London Community Gospel Choir, and a harmonised arrangement of Silent Night, in preparation for carol singing in the community on several occasions throughout December.
Jazz Band, recently returned from their stadium gig (OEBP Awards, Kassam Stadium!), performed several of their favourites including a loosely seasonal ‘Rockin’ Robin’. It is great to see how students are becoming increasingly confident in their improvised solos.
Congratulations to all performers.

Particularly noteworthy is that a significant portion of the evening’s performances were choreographed by the students themselves, mostly as part of their GCSE Dance exam work. The programme also included three pieces performed and choreographed by Year 9s. The quality of choreography was impressive throughout and in some cases truly outstanding. All students should feel extremely proud of their achievements.
The first half finished with a lively performance by Apprentice Dance Company (led by Ruby Painting,
Year 12 AS-Level Dance student), for some of whom this was their first performance since joining Larkmead in Year 7 in September.
The evening was completed with an accomplished dance from the Dance Company, whose carefully co-ordinated costumes really added to the professionalism of the piece.
Thank you to Miss Johnson and Miss Pedley for all their hard work in preparing students this term and well done to all dancers for such wonderful performances.
