WHOLE SCHOOL PRODUCTION: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Rehearsals are now underway for the Little Shop of Horrors production. The first Work Party will take place in the Main Hall on Saturday 13th November, 9.30am-4pm. All parents, friends and students very welcome to help make props, set and costumes for the show. Click here to find out more.
* ‘The band were fantastic and really woke me up on a Monday morning. The day also opened my eyes on how music is made’ (Miniver)
* ‘A great experience. It’s amazing to work with professional musicians and to hear how they got to where they are today. It really gives the young, budding musician hope’ (Sam)
* ‘I enjoyed working with One:Day:Life because they have inspired me to take up the drums’ (Katie)
Students then participated in a variety of workshops throughout the day with their own band:
· Marketing workshop (run by One:Day:Life band)
· Logo design workshop (run by the D&T department)
· Photo shoot / interview session (run by the Drama Department)
· Album cover design using Photoshop software (run by the Art Department)
· Creating a web page workshop (run by the ICT Department)
· Developing musical skills on guitar / drums (run by One:Day:Life band and the Music Department)
· Using Audacity software to produce and edit music tracks (run by the Music Department).
Students are also writing reviews of the One:Day:Life performance in their English lessons.
The band were extremely positive about the way the Year 9s responded throughout the day and the students clearly benefitted from this cross-curricular approach to learning.
As well as working with Year 9 students as part of their Arts Award, One:Day:Life also helped other students to learn about Music and the music industry.
Year 10 Creative and Media Diploma students filmed and photographed the band throughout their performance and later interviewed the band members about their own careers and the music industry. Students clearly enjoyed this opportunity as well as finding it helpful for their course:
* ‘It will help me to understand what it takes to perform and the money side of things in the future.’
* ‘I've found out it takes a lot of dedication and effort to be in a band and it’s not just about performing.’
* I’ve learned: ‘be more creative and you can achieve‘
YEAR 7 AFRICAN ARTS DAY - 20TH OCTOBER
All Year 7 students participated in an African Arts Day, led by Osun Arts in collaboration with the VPA, DT and Humanities Faculties. As well as experiencing a live performance of African music/dance, Year 7students participated in 3 workshops during the day, from African drumming, dancing, storytelling, clay mask making and African cookery. We were delighted to be joined by 68 parents in the afternoon, who share in some of the sights, sounds and tasts of Africa. Click here to see some photos from the day.

Year 10 GCSE Music students worked with the band on developing their own Songwriting skills. They wrote three group songs in their workshop – check these out on Larkmead Rocks (our online record label): follow the link on www.lmsvpa.com
One student wrote: ‘I really enjoyed working with professional musicians and it was great to get performance and composing tips from them. I also enjoyed composing and performing in a group.
Also, talented Guitarists, Bassists and Drummers from Years 8, 9 and 10 participated in a performing techniques workshop with the band. It was great to see students from different year groups working together and all students performed in a group at the end of the session – their performances are also on Larkmead Rocks.
