Little Shop of Horrors is a rock musical, by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood.
The musical, created in 1982, is based on the story of a low-budget 1960 black comedy film ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’, directed by Roger Corman.
The music, composed by Menken (who also wrote the music for Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid) is in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown. It includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, "Skid Row (Downtown)", "Somewhere That's Green", and "Suddenly, Seymour".
In addition to performances on Broadway, the West End and all over the world, a film version of the Menken/Ashman musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ was also made in 1986.
Cast
Cast auditions took place on 14th/16th September and the production team was delighted with the high number of students interested in being in this year’s cast (over 90 students in Years 8-12). The standard was incredibly high and all students should feel very proud of their efforts. As we begin rehearsals with such a strong cast we can look forward to the next few months of working together to produce an excellent show.
The first rehearsal on Tuesday 21st September was very successful - students quickly grasped the four-part harmonies in Skid Row and staff were very impressed with the AMAZING sound they produced together. Well done everyone!
Rehearsals will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school (31.5-4.45pm) plus a couple of VITAL rehearsals for all cast and crew members on Sunday 30th January and Sunday 6th February. Please ensure these are in your diary now!
A detailed rehearsal explains exactly which rehearsals each cast member is needed at (organised by character / groups). These schedules will be available for students to collect at rehearsals or, alternatively, download a copy here.
